I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there – Genesis 46:3
SUMMARY
Genesis 46: Jacob sets out for Egypt with his family after God reassures him in a vision that it is safe to do so. God promises to make Jacob (Isreal) into a great nation and assures him that He will accompany him and bring him back to Canaan. Jacob travels with his sons, their children, and all their livestock, totalling seventy people, including Joseph’s two sons born in Egypt. Upon arriving in Goshen, Joseph joyfully reunites with his father, and Jacob expresses his contentment at seeing Joseph alive. Joseph then plans to introduce his family to Pharaoh, instructing them to present themselves as shepherds, which will allow them to settle in Goshen, a region favoured for their occupation.
Genesis 47: Joseph informs Pharaoh that his family has arrived from Canaan and asks for permission for them to live in Goshen because of the severe famine back home. Pharaoh agrees, offering the best land for Joseph’s family and suggesting that they can help with his livestock if any of them have special skills. Joseph brings his father Jacob to meet Pharaoh, who asks about Jacob’s age. Jacob shares that he is 130 years old and has had a difficult life. After this meeting, Joseph settles his family in the best area of Egypt and provides them with food. As the famine worsens, Joseph helps the Egyptians by trading food for their livestock and, later, their land, which puts them in servitude to Pharaoh. He sets a law that requires the people to give a fifth of their produce to Pharaoh while they keep the rest for themselves. The Israelites thrive in Goshen and Jacob lives for 17 more years in Egypt. As he nears death, Jacob asks Joseph to promise to bury him in Canaan with his ancestors, and Joseph agrees.
