High School Initiation & Singing Debuts

This memory is shared by Anonymous and dates back to around 1989:

My first week of grade 8 felt like stepping onto a comedy stage, all thanks to my two initiating seniors who seemed determined to turn me into their personal prank puppet.

So there I was, reluctantly strutting into school one morning wearing a nightgown over my uniform, dragging a suitcase big enough to house a small family, all because they decided I was about to embark on a bizarre “world tour.” And that was just the beginning of their shenanigans.

Then came the Tarzan and Jane episode. Yours truly reluctantly paired with “Tarzan”, another bewildered grade 8, hopping onto school desks, balcony walls, and whatever else we could find, all while shouting our stage names like we were auditioning for a jungle-themed Broadway show. It was absurdly fun, and we probably scared a few pigeons along the way.

But the pièce de résistance? Oh, it had to be the day they turned me into a singing and dancing sensation. Imagine me, belting out the Afrikaans children’s song “Eendjies, eendjies, staan in ‘n ry” while doing a dance that can only be described as a cross between a chicken shimmy and a duck waddle. I was a mix of nerves and giggles, but hey, the audience loved it. Who knew my shower singing sessions would prepare me for such a moment?

Looking back, I’m grateful I dove headfirst into the madness. As for the grade 8’s that refused to take part – well, they not only made their own lives more difficult, they also missed out big time on the hilarity. Embracing the absurdity made my high school days so much more fun. And if I could go back, I would do it all over again – the hulimation, the weirdness, and all the fun.
